3. What are the Educational Standards and Expectations for a Grade 12 level?
As students begin these relatively new courses, it is essential to grasp the fundamentals, expectations, and standards that form the bedrock of these courses. Although educational standards and expectations for Grade 12 Data Management courses often vary by region and educational system, there are 5 areas of study with expectations for each as outlined in the Ontario curriculum:
A) Counting and Probability
For this area of focus, students must be able to find the probability of an event or combination of events, using permutations and combinations.
B) Probability Distributions
Students will have to demonstrate an understanding of discrete and continuous probability distributions, representing them numerically, graphically, and algebraically. They must be able to determine standard deviations and have an understanding of normal distributions.
C) Organization of Data for Analysis
This area of Data Management is incredibly important for anyone hoping to work in the Data Management field. Students must be able to understand the role of data in statistics and its variability. Students must know how to identify a good sample, as results from a bad sample would be inaccurate and detrimental to any research in a data analysis work setting. Students must demonstrate sampling techniques, and collect and organize data to set up and solve a problem.
D) Statistical Analysis
Perhaps the most important area for anyone wanting to go into the data analysis field is knowing how to make statistical analysis, interpret the results and draw conclusions from different types of data, and present both numerically and graphically.
E) Culminating Data Management Investigation
This area is the culmination of all the above skills used in one Data Management project to analyze, interpret and present data and its findings. Students must be able to apply the results to the context of the data, and decide what it means for the future.
4. Tips for Taking a Data Management Course Online
Ontario Virtual School’s online course on data management has much of the same areas of study as the Ontario Government’s Education Curriculum. It also includes strategies and tips on teaching and learning in an online format. Some of these include:
Reasoning and Proving - Reasoning and knowing why your answer is correct is essential to mathematical understanding. If a student can understand when an answer does not make sense, it means they understand the concept and are not just regurgitating formulas and answers.
Reflecting - Students should demonstrate that they are reflecting on their strategies used, proposing other strategies, the reasonableness of results, and verifying solutions. This ensures complete understanding and the ability to apply learning to real-life investigations.
Making Connections - Students should be able to connect statistical analysis to applicable situations and create investigation ideas.
Representing - Students must be able to present what they know through visuals, graphs, geometry, algebra, etc.
Communicating - Not all students communicate what they know through a test. Sometimes students can easily communicate what they know orally or visually. Give them options to communicate what they know.
The strategies above are useful for both students and teachers. Students can use these tips as a guide to ensure they have a full understanding of Data Management. Teachers can use these tips as a rubric to formatively assess student learning.
Ontario Virtual School’s summary of this course also encourages teachers to adapt curriculum and instructional approaches while still assessing the understanding of the listed expectations. Assessments are meant to help students learn and also pinpoint misunderstandings, not to hand out a grade. Teachers can use both formative and summative assessments to provide descriptive and constructive feedback to students, and remind them of the strategies it takes to learn Grade 12 Data Management online.

6. What is Data Management?
Still wondering what data management really is? Data management includes collecting, keeping, maintaining and organizing data. The purpose of data management is to help people, businesses and organizations discover connections in data for their benefit. It has become an important part of the corporate world as it can be used to do the following:
Make better informed decisions
Improve marketing
Reduce costs
It also includes data analysis which involves solving problems of probability and statistics. Grade 12 Data Management can become a fun investigation when answering the questions of who, what, when, where and why to discover trends based on data collected from a business over a period of time.
For example, you may have collected data over a number of years about what kind of consumers buy during Black Friday. You can examine sex, age, career, location, etc. and use your discoveries to make decisions on your marketing for next year’s Black Friday sale.
