Attending The University of Waterloo: Tips For International Students
Attending university outside of your own country may feel intimidating and overwhelming! It may be the first time you are considering living away from your home and family. However, there are many advantages, especially if you plan to start a career in Canada or North America.
If you are a high school student and are interested in attending The University of Waterloo in Ontario Canada, here are some tips to help you best prepare for your Canadian university career.
1. Attend a Canadian High School
Attending a Canadian high school is one way to guarantee that you will have all of the required high school credits for attending the University of Waterloo. You won’t have to worry about transferring credits or potentially needing to take a few extra courses in order to meet admission requirements.
There are schools in Canada that help international students prepare for university. For example, Waterloo Independent Secondary School (WISS) helps to prepare international students for Canadian universities.
WISS provides an opportunity for international students to attend high school in Canada.
When students attend WISS, they have access to the highest quality education, the opportunity to learn and expand their English skills (we will talk more about that below), and become more familiar and comfortable with Canadian culture. WISS has a 100% post-secondary admission rate, and 40% of 2021 WISS grads were accepted into the University of Waterloo!
2. Expand Your English Skills
In order to get accepted into the University of Waterloo, English is a requirement. Classes will be taught in English as well as homework, tests, and exams will be written in English. Therefore, it is important that students have a good understanding of the English language in order to excel in school.
For international students considering attending a Canadian high school, one of the biggest benefits is that you will have the opportunity to completely immerse yourself in Canadian culture, which will make it easier to learn English and expand your existing skills.
3. Get Good Grades in High school
All universities, including the University of Waterloo, take a look at your high school transcripts (grades) and will base admissions partly on this information. Minimum grade requirements and GPAs are required for all programs, though the specific admission requirements will depend on the program.
If you already know that you would like to attend university, or even if you are unsure but think there is a chance, focusing on your grades is always a good idea.
4. Submit The “Admission Information Form”
At the University of Waterloo, they take a number of factors into consideration when deciding who will gain admission. Filling out and submitting the Admission Information Form allows you to provide more information about who you are and why you want to attend UWaterloo. You can learn more about the process in the video below at Time Stamp 8:58 in the chapter called “Application process and Admission Information Form”.

The AIF is required for applying to certain programs, but for other programs, you can include it as an extra. As an international student, this is a great opportunity to show your drive and explain why it is so important to attend this university.
5. Read Up On Admission Requirements Ahead Of Time
It is always good to be prepared. The University of Waterloo makes it very easy to see the exact admission requirements for each of its undergraduate programs. Not only that, but you can input specifics such as your level of education and system of study. Their online database will tell you exactly what you need to apply based on the information you put in. Check it out here!
6. Find Out If You Should Complete Tests
It is important to find out if you need any additional tests, such as the SATs. Most Canadian schools will accept SAT scores as a way for applicants to meet program requirements, even if the program doesn’t require completion of the test. Therefore, even if a program doesn’t require a test, it may still be a good idea to complete it so you can show your excellent scores while applying.
7. Learn More About Canadian Culture
This is by no means a requirement to attend the University of Waterloo - however, it may help you feel more comfortable before you attend a Canadian university! Studying away from home can be a challenge. You may be away from your family for the first time ever.
Learning more about Canada can help you feel more at home while attending school here.
Not only that, you may be in a country that has very different customs from your own, and that can feel a bit scary. In order to prepare for the very best university experience, it is a great idea to learn more about your new home away from home! It can help make the transition to university a lot easier for you, which means you will have more energy to put into your studies.
