2. Principles of Mathematics: Units of Study
This course is broken down into 3 basic components:
8 Units of Study (70% of Final Grade)
Culminating Project (20% of Final Grade)
Final Exam (10% of Final Grade)

a) 8 Units of Study

UNIT ONE - Rational Numbers: What are the differences between different types of numbers?
UNIT TWO - Powers and Polynomials: How do we represent polynomials in different forms using exponents?
UNIT THREE - Linear Relations: Why do we learn about lines (word problem related)?
UNIT FOUR - Linear Equations: How do we solve linear equations using a variety of strategies?
UNIT FIVE - Analytic Geometry: Where do we use geometry in everyday life?
UNIT SIX - Investigating Relationships: How do we describe relationships between data?
UNIT SEVEN - Properties of 2-D Figures: How do we investigate and create different polygons?
UNIT EIGHT - Measurement: How is optimization related to various 2-D measurements?
As you will see, these units of study focus on algebra, analytic geometry, investigative measurement and geometry, technology, and abstract reasoning. They will also explore equations of lines, different representations of linear relations, and relationships emerging from the measurement of three-dimensional figures and two-dimensional shapes.
b) Culminating Project
This project is part of the student’s final evaluation. It is intended to assess the student’s understanding of the concepts taught throughout the above units of study. This project is worth 20% of the final grade.
c) Final Exam
The final exam is the other part of the student’s final evaluation. It is a proctored exam that takes about 1.5 hours to complete and is worth 10% of the final grade. Students are expected to complete and submit all coursework before writing their final exam and will need to make advanced arrangements to write their exam.
