Grade 12 Math Online: Advanced Functions

1. Introduction to Advanced Functions (MHF4U)

The Advanced Functions (MHF4U ) course at Waterloo Independent School is an online, university-level mathematics class designed to extend Grade 12 students' knowledge of functions. It is aligned with Ontario curriculum expectations and covers the following key concepts:

  • Polynomial Functions

  • Rational Functions

  • Logarithmic Functions

  • Trigonometric Functions

  • Principles of Rates of Change

MHF4U helps students refine their mathematical processes and develop problem-solving skills, essential for further studies in fields like science, engineering, and business. It serves as a critical foundation for students pursuing higher education.

Please note that this course is intended for students taking Calculus and Vectors (MCV4U) as a prerequisite for a university program and/or for those proceeding to another related university program.

PREREQUISITE: Grade 11 Functions, (MCR3U) or Grade 12 Mathematics for College Technology (MCT4C)

2. Advanced Functions (MHF4U): Units of Study

This course is broken down into 2 basic components:

  • 5 Units of Study (70% of Final Grade)

  • Final Exam (30% of Final Grade)

Let’s look in more detail at the 2 basic components of Grade 12 Math Online: Advanced Functions (MHF4U).

a) 5 Units of Study

The following is a list of the 5 units of study and the essential questions that WISS has created to help students begin thinking about each unit of study. For more detailed information about the units, please click here.

  • UNIT ONE - Polynomials: How can characteristics of polynomials be used to make connections between functions and their graphical representations?

  • UNIT TWO - Rational Functions: What patterns exist in rational functions and how can they be used to make predictions about their graphs?

  • UNIT THREE - Trigonometry: How can the properties of trigonometric functions be used to make predictions about real-world scenarios?

  • UNIT FOUR - Exponential and Logarithmic Functions: How can the relationship between exponential and logarithmic functions be used to solve real-world problems?

  • UNIT FIVE - Combining Functions and Rates of Change: How can rates of change be used to make sense of motion in the world?

Throughout these units, students will develop their understanding of functions and learn to apply the concepts taught in real-world situations.

b) Final Exam

The final exam is the student’s final evaluation. It is a proctored exam that takes about 2 hours to complete and is worth 30% of the final grade. Students are expected to complete and submit all coursework before writing their final exam and will need to make advanced arrangements to write their exam.

As with other courses at WISS, Grade 12 Math Online: Advanced Functions (MHF4U) is a well-organized class that is taught by knowledgeable and caring teachers. WISS boasts small class sizes, flexible schedules, and frequent student support to encourage student success.

Taking Advanced Functions (MHF4U) offers several key benefits for students, especially those pursuing further studies in mathematics-related fields. Here are some of the main advantages:

  • Foundation for Higher Education

The course is essential for students planning to study subjects like engineering, physics, economics, computer science, or business in university, as it covers advanced mathematical concepts needed for these fields.

  • Develops Problem-Solving Skills

Students enhance their critical thinking and problem-solving abilities by working with complex mathematical functions, equations, and real-world applications.

  • Prepares for Calculus

MHF4U is a prerequisite for Calculus and Vectors (MCV4U) and other advanced courses. It builds a strong foundation in algebra, trigonometry, and functions, which are critical for success in calculus.

  • Improves Analytical Thinking

The course encourages logical and analytical reasoning by teaching students to break down complex problems, which is a valuable skill in both academic and professional settings.

  • Applications to Real Life

By working with concepts like exponential growth, rates of change, and periodic functions, students learn how mathematics applies to real-world situations, from business models to natural phenomena.

  • University Admissions

Many post-secondary programs require MHF4U as a prerequisite, especially in STEM fields. Completing this course improves students' eligibility for a range of competitive university programs.

Overall, MHF4U equips students with essential mathematical knowledge and skills that will benefit them in their academic pursuits and professional careers.
