Tips

Before your child takes the standardized testing in Ontario, make sure you walk them through the following steps:

  • Understand the Test Format: Review the test format with your child. The Grade 3 EQAO has sections for reading, writing, and math. Make sure your child understands how multiple-choice, short-answer, and long-answer questions work.

  • Practice in Short Sessions: Break down practice into short, focused study sessions. Frequent but brief practice is more effective for young children than long study periods.

  • Reading Comprehension Focus: Work on improving your child's reading comprehension skills by reading stories and discussing them. Ask questions about the story's main idea, characters, and details to encourage deeper understanding.

  • Math Practice with Real-Life Examples: Use everyday situations (like shopping, cooking, or playing) to help your child practice math skills in a fun way. For example, use measuring cups while cooking to practice fractions.

  • Encourage Writing Practice: Have your child write short stories, letters, or descriptions. This helps improve their writing fluency and prepares them for the writing sections of the EQAO.

  • Simulate a Test Environment: Once your child is comfortable with the format, simulate a test environment by using sample tests under timed conditions to help them manage time better.

By following these steps, your child will feel more comfortable when it comes to testing time!

  • Strengthen Math Skills:

    • Use the sample math questions from EQAO-released assessments.

    • Encourage showing all work and explaining reasoning, as partial credit is often awarded for the correct process.

  • Simulate Test Conditions:

    • Have your child complete practice tests within the same time limits as the actual exam.

    • This helps build stamina and time management skills.

Additionally, you can also consult with your child’s teachers. Reach out to your child's teachers for additional resources and guidance as they can provide insights into your child's strengths and areas for improvement. And, as you help your kids prepare, remember to stay positive and supportive.

Tips

Here are some study tips to help you and your son or daughter prepare for the Grade 9 EQAO math assessment.

  • Understand the Test Format: The EQAO Grade 9 test consists of multiple-choice, short-answer, and long-answer questions. Familiarizing your child with the format by reviewing past tests will help them understand the expectations and avoid surprises on test day.

Practice Tests

If you are looking for further practice, there are some older sample booklets available on the internet. Click here to see an EQAO sample test for the OSSLT. Keep in mind that the most recent resources are found on the EQAO website. We’ve posted a video below that tells you what to expect.

This video will outline what you can expect on the Grade 10 OSSLT.

Tips

In this section, we’ve listed some study tips for Grade 10 students taking the OSSLT. The OSSLT assesses reading comprehension and writing skills. Overall, students should focus on answering questions about main ideas, supporting details, and making inferences in reading. In writing, practice organizing essays and improving grammar and sentence structure.

  • Practice Reading and Writing Regularly: For the OSSLT, students should practice reading a variety of texts, such as informational articles, opinion pieces, and short stories. They should practice writing short essays, reports, and opinion pieces to improve their writing skills.

  • Understand the Test Format: Go over past EQAO tests to familiarize your child with the format, timing, and expectations of the literacy tests. Understanding question types will reduce test anxiety and improve performance.

  • Timed Practice Sessions: To mimic the test environment, practice questions under timed conditions. This helps students manage their time effectively during the actual exam which is divided into 2 sessions over 2.5 hrs.

  • Work on Short-Answer and Long-Answer Responses: The literacy test includes both short and long writing tasks. Practice summarizing information in concise ways for short answers and structuring coherent essays for long-answer questions.

If you are having difficulty, remember to seek help. Consider tutoring, online resources, or joining a study group. If there are writing concepts you are struggling with, getting extra help can make a big difference.

Here is a lesson from Grammar Monster, a helpful tool students can use to improve in grammar.
