EQAO Practice Tests & Prep

1. Prep Guides

EQAO stands for Education Quality and Accountability Office. This is an agency of the Government of Ontario responsible for the assessment of education in Ontario public schools. Each year, the government arranges for testing to be done at the following levels in the following subjects:

  • Primary-Division Assessments of Reading, Writing and Mathematics

  • Junior-Division Assessments of Reading, Writing and Mathematics

  • Grade 9 Assessment of Mathematics

  • Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) (Note: This is usually taken in Grade 10)

In this section, we’ve outlined the EQAO prep guides we recommend and that are available for the levels/subjects as outlined above.

a) Primary-Division Assessments of Reading, Writing and Mathematics

Includes 10 tests to prompt students to read sentences, paragraphs, and stories, and then comment on what they understood. There is additional writing practice covering a variety of writing styles. Also available as an enhanced e-book.

Includes 5 tests focused on key skills such as number sense, geometry, probability and more, plus another 5 tests featuring mixed problems that combine a variety of skills together. Also available as an enhanced e-book.

Save money with this double-length e-book containing both the 10 language and 10 math tests featured above. This is also available as an enhanced e-book.

b) Junior-Division Assessments of Reading, Writing and Mathematics

Includes 10 tests to get students to read fiction, nonfiction, a newspaper article, a poem, and more, and then explain what they understood. There are also questions involving writing practice to cover a variety of styles. Also available as an enhanced e-book.

c) Grade 9 Assessment of Mathematics

While we don’t help provide the Grade 9 prep guides like the ones we recommend and featured above, Study.com has a course available for students who want to review for the Gr. 9 Math Assessment. The lessons cover the following subjects:

  • Basic algebra

  • Geometry (expressions, graphs and slopes, linear relations, nonlinear functions)

  • Perimeter, area and volume

  • Problem solving methods

  • Proportions, rates and percent

  • Ratio calculations

This course is self-paced and has 85 lessons that are an average of 8 minutes in length. There is also an exam. For more information about what the curriculum standards are for Mathematics in Ontario, click here.

d) Grade 10 Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT)

The Toronto District School Board provides a helpful prep guide for the OSSLT. You can find it here: Preparation Workbook Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test. The guide covers what to expect, reading strategies, test tips, and sample reading and writing tasks.

By engaging in practice tests, students will feel less test anxiety and parents will know firsthand how their children are progressing in relation to Ontario standards.

2. Practice Tests

Below you’ll find a list of some practice tests available for students in the Primary, Junior and Secondary divisions. There are sample and practice tests available, with the majority of these coming directly from the EQAO website itself.

a) Primary-Division Assessments of Reading, Writing and Mathematics

Here are some resources that Grade 3 students and teachers can check out for EQAO practice tests:

b) Junior-Division Assessments of Reading, Writing and Mathematics

Next are some EQAO resources to help you find practice tests for Grade 6 students:

c) Grade 9 Assessment of Mathematics

Here are 2 resources available online for the Grade 9 Mathematics assessment:

d) Grade 10 Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT)

Finally, here is a link to a practice test for the OSSLT. Please note that there are other sites that offer sample tests, but the majority of them are past sample tests available through the EQAO website.

The more practice students get, the more confident they’ll be. Plus, as a parent you’ll have better insight into the skills your son or daughter has already developed and/or still needs to develop.

4. What is EQAO?

The Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) in Ontario, Canada, is an independent agency responsible for evaluating the quality and effectiveness of education in the province. EQAO administers standardized tests to students in Ontario's publicly funded schools. These tests assess student achievement in reading, writing, and mathematics at key stages of their education:

  1. Primary Division (Grade 3) Assessment: Tests reading, writing, and mathematics skills.

  2. Junior Division (Grade 6) Assessment: Similar to the Grade 3 assessment, it evaluates students' abilities in reading, writing, and mathematics.

  3. Grade 9 Assessment of Mathematics: Measures students' math skills and is administered to all students in Grade 9.

  4. Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT): Usually taken in Grade 10, this test assesses the literacy (reading and writing) skills of students.

The results from these assessments are used to provide feedback to educators, parents, and policymakers to help improve the education system in Ontario.
