EQAO Meaning

1. EQAO Meaning & Definition

If you look up EQAO in the Urban Dictionary, you’ll see these letters can, for some, represent Evil Questions Attacking Ontario! Yikes. I guess some people really dread that time of year when the EQAO tests roll around. But of course, that isn’t what EQAO actually stands for. Let’s look at what it really means.

EQAO Meaning: Evil Questions Attacking Ontario or Education Quality and Accountability Office?

EQAO stands for The Education Quality and Accountability Office. They are an official agency of the Government of Ontario and you can find their website here. The purpose of this office is to assess the quality of a student’s education between Kindergarten and Grade 12 in Ontario. To do so, they have created a variety of tests. Keep reading to learn more.

2. About EQAO

While there are different ways to assess a student’s education, the EQAO tests focus on assessing students’ literacy and math skills. The tests happen in Grade 3, Grade 6, Grade 9 and Grade 10. The tests used to be delivered in a paper format; however, now they are available as e-assessments or digital assessments.

Below you will find a list of the assessments done in each major division, the Primary, Junior and Intermediate-Senior divisions. You can click on the links to see the frameworks offered on the EQAO website. These provide detailed descriptions of the assessments, including how the assessments are related to the language and mathematics curricula.

Primary Division: Grade 3 Reading, Writing and Mathematics

Junior Division: Grade 6 Reading, Writing and Mathematics

Intermediate-Senior Division: Grade 9 Mathematics, Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test

These frameworks help answer questions like, What is assessed? How is the assessment scored? How is literacy emphasized throughout the Ontario Curriculum?

3. How EQAO Affects Your Grade

While students may feel anxious about writing these tests, they can rest assured that the results do not affect their grades at the Primary and Junior levels.

It is, however, a little different for the Intermediate-Senior division. Up to 10% of the Grade 9 EQAO Math results may be used in calculating students’ final grades. Also, passing the OSSLT is required for High School students to receive their Ontario Secondary School Diploma.

4. Is EQAO Mandatory?

All public schools in Ontario are expected to participate in EQAO testing. Even private schools and teaching parents will opt-in so that they can review their students’ achievements and see how their students’ averages compare with those of others in Ontario.

For instance, you can search a school or school board and see their results, as well as the students’ feedback on their access to technology, their interest in subjects, and their confidence levels.

Discover the Find My School search tool to see EQAO results. Note: Only public school results are posted with this tool; however, individuals from outside of the public school system will still receive their results privately.

5. When Does EQAO Start?

As mentioned earlier, the first EQAO test occurs in Grade 3 and covers the reading, writing and mathematics skills students are expected to have learned by the end of this grade. The testing continues up until Grade 10 with the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test.

If you are wondering when the testing occurs throughout the school year, here are some upcoming dates as listed on the EQAO website:

6. EQAO Tests & Homeschoolers

While EQAO tests are not required for homeschoolers, they can participate in the tests if desired for no charge. According to the Ministry of Education’s Policy/Program Memorandum 13, homeschooling parents “must contact the school board by September 30 (or another date specified by the school board) of the year in which the assessments/tests are being conducted for information about the dates, times, and locations.”

These tests can help parents assess their own educational standards in comparison to Ontario standards of education. To help your homeschoolers prepare for these tests, you can try the Sample and Practice Tests listed on the main page of the EQAO website.
